Breastfeeding in the Summer

BreastfeedingSummer

Here in the northern hemisphere it is summertime and it is HOT.  What does a breastfeeding mom need to worry about?

1. Stay hydrated.  This is key when breastfeeding, and more so when the weather warms up.  Make sure to have water handy and drink to thirst.  Some moms find a water bottle or special water cup helps them be intentional about drinking water. If your urine appears dark yellow, increase your water intake.

2. Find shade.  Babies, especially those under 6 months shouldn’t be out in the direct sunlight, especially during peak hours.  A baby’s skin is more sensitive and burns easily, so keep those little ones safe.

3. Nurse often.  Babies under 6 months only need breastmilk [or formula].  Keep them hydrated by nursing on cue.  You don’t need to give them water or anything else. Breastmilk is enough.

4. Eat.  Make sure to consume enough calories to produce all the breastmilk your little one will need to stay hydrated in the summer weather.

5. Enjoy your time with your baby.  Go out and make some memories!
