The koala hold breastfeeding position requires your baby to be resting on your thigh with his/her body facing you. The baby’s face should be directly in front of your breast, allowing for a nice, long neck extension and a wide open mouth for a proper latch. Chin should be tipped up toward the breast, hands can be down to sides or up against your body; you’ll want to lean back just a bit to allow gravity to work in your favor. The koala hold can be very helpful in encouraging a solid latch if other positions have been problematic or if you’re looking for a position that allows your arms to get a bit of a rest. Go ahead and give this less-common but quite comfortable position a try the next time you sit down for a nursing session.
