How to Use a Nipple Shield for Breastfeeding

Rumina Center | February 10, 2026

It is highly recommended that you work with a lactation consultant to guide you through nipple shield usage so that you can be sure you’re using the right nipple shield and that you’re using it for the right reasons.

Nipple shields come in different sizes and different shapes. So how do you determine which one is best for you? A nipple shield that is too large will move around and have trouble staying in place whereas one that is the proper size will use your breast’s nipple as a foundation to stay in place.

To apply the nipple shield, flip the outer rim up, place the nipple piece over your own nipple and apply to your breast. A properly-fitting nipple shield will help draw your nipple into the shield which helps the shield stay in place during use.

Lactation consultants are able to assist in the use and fit of nipple shields. Please speak with an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) to be sure nipple shields are the best option for your particular challenge.
